Funky accessories, a cool vintage vibe, and wall-to-wall denim put this local spot on the map. Foxhole of Silver Lake C.A. is a smart stop for custom reconstructed denim and a lot more.
I stepped in the eclectic setting not knowing what to expect. Towards the near of the narrow shop sat a quiet guy sewing denim while in a private conversation with a young lady with her hands curled over themselves as if she had something to hide. I wasn’t sure if I was cool enough to engage in conversation. I took a deep breath and introduced myself anyway.
Quickly I learned the bearded dude owns the place with his wife Fox. The young companion to his left shook her head, as if to say, “that’s not me.” Then he waved his hands with thread and needle, as if he were an orchestra conductor talking about running away with the circus. He had me at circus.
Glenn
How long have you both lived in Los Angeles?
Fox
I’m originally from LA and Jeff’s been here 5 years now… Since he got back from literally running away and joining the circus.
G
Tell me more about that.
F
Jeff traveled the country by train with Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus, and that’s where he fell in love with the railroad.
G
What brought you to Los Angeles’ eastside?
F
It’s one of the few places in LA that feels like a real neighborhood should. We can walk to get practically anything we need and we like supporting all of the business here in our neighborhood where we live and work.
G
What are your thoughts on how the neighborhoods changing?
F
It’s nice seeing the new businesses that have come in recently. It’s definitely changing, but its also still Sunset Blvd so it’s never a dull day here, keeps you on your toes. We get a lot of tourists, and it’s always interesting sharing travel tips and discovering new bands with the new friends we make. Silver lake definitely has a neighborhood vibe to it so that’s why we’ve been here for 5 years now.
G
Do you own or rent your home?
F
We own a place.
G
What are some of your favorite local spots?
F
Breakfast at Local, Dinner at Night Market Song Thai food, Coffee at Muddy Paw, Tattoo’s from California Gold, The Banks LA skate shop, The crew over at Atlantis Motorcycle shop, Silver lake Ramen, and Yummy Market are a few of the places we frequent.
G
What got you into owning a vintage denim shop?
F
I have been a denim designer for 10 years now, and always repaired/tailored my own things from a young age. Our love for denim runs pretty deep.
G
What services does your shop offer besides selling rad vintage denim?
F
We alter, repair, customize, and recycle jeans creating things that happen only once just for you. We enjoy personalizing people’s favorite things for them!
G
Have you heard about John Q’s, from Atlantis Motor, his “Silver Lake East” concept…
F
Yes we know John; we’ve repaired some of the guys at the shops jeans for them actually!
G
Now of course… Tell me about when you first meet each other.
F
We met at a random concert at the Echo, I went up to him and said hi, and our first date was a swap meet so it was just obvious that we were meant to be! We started Foxhole less then a year after we started dating, that was 4 years ago now!!!
G
That’s a love story
