Southwest Museum & The Spiritual Side Of Mount Washington
Mount Washington has always carried a slightly spiritual and introspective energy compared to surrounding neighborhoods.
The historic Southwest Museum sits along the hillside overlooking the Arroyo Seco and remains one of the area’s defining landmarks. The neighborhood is also home to the international headquarters of the Self-Realization Fellowship, founded by Paramahansa Yogananda in the 1920s.
That influence shaped the neighborhood’s identity for generations.
There’s a calmness to Mount Washington that’s difficult to explain unless you’ve spent real time there. It doesn’t feel performative or wellness-branded the way parts of Los Angeles sometimes can.
It just feels quieter.
The Roads, Hills & Views
Mount Washington roads are not for the faint of heart.
Steep grades, blind corners, narrow hillside streets, stairways hidden between homes, and dramatic elevation changes are all part of daily life here.
Eldred Street, one of the steepest streets in Los Angeles, has become somewhat legendary among locals.

Mount Washington History
Before development reached the hills, Mount Washington was largely rugged chaparral land within the historic Rancho San Rafael.
The neighborhood’s transformation began in the early 1900s with the creation of the Mount Washington Hotel and the incline railway that carried prospective buyers uphill from Highland Park below.
The development strategy was simple:
bring people to the top of the hill,
show them the views,
sell them the dream.
And honestly?
It worked.
The neighborhood quickly attracted affluent buyers, artists, creatives, and visitors escaping the noise of the city beneath them. At one point, even Charlie Chaplin reportedly frequented the Mount Washington Hotel while filming nearby.
Later, the property became home to the Self-Realization Fellowship, which still operates there today.
Much of Mount Washington’s historic identity remains remarkably intact compared to other Los Angeles neighborhoods that experienced more aggressive redevelopment.
That preservation is a huge part of the appeal today.
