Glenn
How long have you lived in Los Angeles?

CY
Hi Glenn, thanks for the write up. I have been in Los Angeles for 2 years. Prior to that, I was living in Singapore. It’s also a multi cultural and diverse city-state with an international community.

G
What brought you to Los Angeles’ east side?

CY
A variety of reasons; Practically, the Eastside is where my kid goes to school. I also really enjoy the lifestyle and characteristics of this neighborhood and it’s surrounding areas. Unlike other popular areas in LA, there are streets where you can just walk, relax and not worry about having to drive and be stuck in traffic too much. Silver Lake is also surrounded by tons of good culture and food, which are always important for me. In less than half an hour, we could be visting the museums downtown, trying out all the good Japanese food in little Tokyo, experiencing the vibes of old Chinatown, the authentic restaurants in Koreatown and even the San Gabriel valley. Not to mention there’s tons of good restaurants and coffee places just around Silverlake.

G
What are your thoughts on how the neighborhoods changing?

CY
Yolk has been around since 2003 and we often have customers that have shopped with us since then. They would talk about how much the streets have changed, and became more vibrant and much more populated and busy. There’s also a pride for the architecture and the good schools. It’s a great lifestyle to be had, living in the area.

G
Why do you like living/working in this community?

CY
We love meeting the people who come into the store. They almost instantly become friends. Many of them also work in the creative field and possess a love for design and the products in the store that we have curated from around the world. This includes set and costume designers, graphic designers, architects, film makers, product designers and interior designers and general lovers of good design. We have both a home and lifestyle section with many Scandinavian and international products and Made in USA artisan products. We also have a substantial kids sections of clothes and quality toys and it’s always nice to see parents in the neighborhood come in with their kids every weekend and spend time picking out gifts and hanging out at Yolk. Yolk feels very integrated into the local community and that’s the best part for us.

G
Do you own or rent your home?

KY
I am currently renting.

G
What are some of your favorite local spots for dining and relaxing?

KY
Lamill is right next door to us and we are big fans of their maple glazed donuts and their breakfast. Silver Lake Liquor is also right next door and they have a niche international selection of wine, whiskey, beer. L&E oyster bar is right across the street, and they have good wine and happy hour oysters. There’s Silverlake Ramen with a perpetual queue but it’s worth it. I also like the atmosphere and very well executed cooking at Speranza as well as the classic American food at the Kitchen, both of which are less than 10 minutes away.

G
What got you into owning Yolk? I understand you’re the third owner.

KY
I was working as an economist in Singapore prior to moving to Los Angeles. Once I was here, I decided to look for a business that would fit both my interest and lifestyle in LA and I totally fell in love with the aesthetics and feel of the store when I saw it. It is a great independent store in a very good community, it has great employees and a good culture and I was well acquainted with the brands and products so everything clicked in place.

G
Did you change the store direction or add new retail categories?

KY
We definitely made some changes on the mobile side of the business by introducing a new website, making sure the systems integrate and run efficiently and also introducing more products and engagement via social media like instagram. I also brought in more independent artisan brands including glassware from Japan etc and we’re always open to new brands and designs especially from local artisans that would like some exposure, provided that it fits the quality and aesthetics of the store. However the core of the store and it’s direction remains largely unchanged as I loved the existing range that we had which by the way is huge, significantly bigger than any independent gift store in Los Angeles. Many of the core brands have classic designs that have been around for decades and there’s a durability and sensibility to them that last in any homes.

G
What services does your shop offer if any besides retail?

KY
Other than the standard walk in retail, we often work with interior designers or sets designers and cater for their needs and also provide customized gifts boxes for corporates etc. We can also help with baby and wedding registry both online and offline.

G
What is the best part of being a lifestyle boutique owner in Silver Lake CA?

KY
It’s great walking into a beautiful store that has products that I handpick and curate and to find customers both new and regulars that love the products and their interaction with the store. This area is lively, relaxed peaceful and friendly.
